The Danish register of twins was established in 1954. It contains basic information on all twins in Denmark born between 1870 and 1930 as well as from 1967 up to the present - i.e. registrations of approx. 50,000 persons. The purpose of the register is to obtain a research material which may reveal something about the correlation between disease and heredity. From the start the main purpose of the register was to study the incidence of cancer. Later on the register has been used as the basis of the selection of pairs of twins for surveys on diabetes, schizophrenia and manic-depression. # The register, which is not yet fully machine-readable, contains information on, among other things, dates of birth and death, diseases, if any, and hospital admission. The information was collected by means of copies of church registers, correspondence with national registration offices, probate courts, etc., copies of death certificates, extracts from medical records, extracts from the Central Population Register, as well as questionnaires completed by a number of selected twins or their nearest relations. # The register is currently updated; pairs of twins which have not yet been traced (approx. 5% of the twins born in the time periods so far covered by the register) are still searched for and will be included in the material when they are found. Likewise, new age groups (including twins born between 1930 and 1967) are currently added to the register
